Some 36,000 “illegal immigrants” have been caught crossing into Greece via its land border with Turkey, according to figures made public on Friday, October 7.
This compares to a total of just over 47,000 arrests during the whole of last year.
Greece is in the process of building a 12.5-kilometer fence in Evros, which is one of the main points of entry for “illegal migrants”.

In the recent days repeated racist attacks take place in various neighbourhoods of Athens.
Last night (September 16), 2 Afghan immigrants were attacked outside their home. When they saw a group of thugs approaching, scared they tried to run away but did not manage to escape. The gangs attacked them leaving one stabbed! The victim suffered two wounds, one next to the heart and another one just below.

The European Union will on Friday propose a mechanism to suspend countries from the passport-free Schengen travel area, in a move diplomats say is partly aimed at putting pressure on Greece to keep illegal immigrants out of the bloc.

Around the 8th of September unknown people set fire on a barack where asylum seekers were temporarily living in the transit-port of Patras.

I have been homeless in Athens. I have been homeless in Patras. I have been homeless in Igoumenitsa. I applied for asylum. Now I am again homeless in Patras. I live on the beach and in ruins. Police is hunting us every day.
A few days ago somebody lit fire on the ruin we were living in.

The No Border camp set-up began a week before the opening, with lots of preparation work like digging trenches for water supply, and building infrastructure.

Hundreds of migrants among those who began coming to Greece in the early 1990 in order to seek a better life for themselves and their families, are packing up their belongings, vacating their homes, mustering their courage and setting off for the one-way journey back home, compelled by the economic crisis.
A migrant was killed as Frontex patrol opened fire to migrants crossing the greek-turkish border at Evros river, according to Turkish Press.
The newspaper says that the day before yesterday (prob. 24/8) a group of migrants were attempting to cross illegally from Evros in Greece in Ouzounkioprou of Edirne, as Frontex forces opened fire on them.
According Hurriyet, the migrants have used 5 inflatable boats to cross the river.

Hundreds of asylum-seekers clashed with riot police near an immigrant centre in the southern Italian city of Bari yesterday in a protest to demand refugee status that left dozens lightly injured.
Protesters hurled rocks and metal bars at police lines, set off fires and trashed the facility on the outskirts of Bari. Police responded with tear gas and live rounds fired into the air and 30 protesters were arrested.
