An international consultation on “Ecumenical Advocacy for the Protection of the Human Rights of Migrant Workers in the Arabian Gulf Region” is currently taking place from 29 April to 2 May at the Santhigiri Ashram in Kerala, India. The consultation was organized by the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA) of the World Council of Churches (WCC).

Despite experiencing large-scale immigration flows and settlement over the past half century, the United Kingdom has not developed a formal integration program. Few public policies have specifically sought to advance immigrant integration, and the political debates surrounding immigrant integration have often been fraught and destabilizing, reflecting deep-seated ambivalence in British society about immigrants and immigration.

Today Londoners go to the polls to elect who will be their Mayor for the next four years. In early April MRN launched a Manifesto on Integration and Migration produced in collaboration with several of our members and followers. We invited the four leading campaigns to a public meeting with migrant and refugee community organisations and asked the candidates to respond to the manifesto.

State governments recognize the value diaspora populations bring to development efforts worldwide. Since 2007, the Global Forum on Migration and Development has examined ways to highlight policies and programs that can magnify the resources, both human and financial, that emigrants and their descendants contribute to development.

Hundreds of people took to the streets Sunday to advocate for the rights of migrant workers and celebrate their cultures, in a pre-Labor Day parade that included dancing, singing, and sloganeering.
A crowd of around 400, hoisting country flags and signs, weaved from Dora to St. Joseph’s Church in Monnot, where they feasted on food and watched dances from a wide range of countries.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has always vehemently denied bringing cheap foreign labour into Canada. Employers had to pay foreign temporary workers “the prevailing wage,” he pointed out.
That indeed is what the rules said – until Wednesday, when Human Resources Minister Diane Finley quietly changed them. Employers will now be allowed to pay foreign temp workers 15 per cent less than the average wage.

The Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families today concluded its sixteenth session after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the initial reports of Paraguay and Tajikistan.
The concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Paraguay and Tajikistan will be available on the Committee’swebpage next week.
